A z/OS shop is migrating their tape data from older technology such as 3490 or 3590, to a newer technology such as virtual tape, 3592, 9840, or T10000. Data managed by HSM, ABR, or CA:DISK (DMS) is already being migrated by those products. The rest of the tape data, including application datasets, GDG’s, SMF, user datasets, needs to be migrated. Typically, there are upwards of 10,000 tapes in this category, sometimes 100,000 or more.  

Proper migration of the wide variety of tape structures is very time-consuming and tedious. You have to consider which tapes to migrate; generate JCL to copy them; communicate with Operations to find these tapes; wait for them to be loaded into the ATL (or longer); diagnose and correct problems that occur; check the output listings; and scratch the input tapes at the appropriate time. There is plenty of opportunity for error.
