TelTape is a utility program for tape devices, media and data. It enables you to:

  • Copy thousands of volumes to newer tape technologies (see FAQ).
  • Automate foreign tape processing.
  • Map contents of unknown tapes.
  • Check an existing tape to ensure all data is readable.

  • Automatically update Tape Management and System Catalogs while copying tapes.
  • Access tapes easily: On-line via ISPF, and avoiding JCL by using dynamic allocation.
  • View and report results easily with spreadsheet output.
  • Use selection criteria to generate simulation reports and copy the appropriate volume serials.
  • Produce an extensive audit trail automatically during tape conversion.

What are the benefits of using TelTape?

TelTape gives you the following benefits:

  • Exploit new technologies such as Virtual Tape and High Capacity tapes by copying catalog-, expiry-date-, cycle-, etc. controlled tapes to new volume serials.
  • Fast copying – TelTape for z/OS uses EXCP to copy by block, not by record; - you can run multiple copies concurrently.
  • Avoid waiting for unavailable tapes to be mounted – off-site and out-of-library tapes are not selected for copying, and are identified on a special report.
  • View dataset names, file formats, member lists, ISPF statistics, etc. of tape datasets without loading data to disk.

System requirements

TelTape for z/OS requires:

  • z/OS operating system
  • 15 cylinders of 3390 disk space, for installation
  • Some features require ISPF
  • Some features require a library manager such as IBM 3494, IBM 3584, or Sun/StorageTek NCS
  • Some features require a tape management system such as CA-1 or IBM RMM
