Migrating to IBM VTS

A leading employee benefits company in the U.S. Northeast  currently uses StorageTek Silos, CA-1 TMS, and 3490E, 3480 media. They use DFHSM and DMS/OS to manage some of their tape data. Their new technology includes 4 IBM Virtual Tape Servers (VTS) and IBM 3590 tape drives. They are using TelTape/390 to migrate their tape datasets from the 3490E and 3480 media to VTS "virtual volumes". VTS will stack the tape volumes onto high capacity 3590 tape cartridges.

Certifying used 3590 tapes

What they like about TelTape/390
  • Maintain TMS integrity (creating jobname, creation date, accounting code, etc. of the migrated volumes matches the corresponding input volumes).
  • Recatalog of tape DSNs is performed at the appropriate time, i.e. after a tape is successfully copied, or for a multi-volume set, after the entire set has been successfully copied.
  • TelTape/390 identifies tapes which are managed by DFHSM and DMS/OS, and by default bypasses those tapes for copying.
  • They have special requirements for certain volume serials. They can input a list of specific volume serials to TelTape/390, and apply the selection criteria to that list of tapes.
  • Although they have a "mod" to CA-1 TMS, they are able to use TelTape/390 for migration without changes.
  • Quick install for testing without SMP/E.
  • Flexibility of Cartagena to accept enhancement requests.
