Myths,
Mistakes and Outright Lies (When it comes to network security)
When you build a network security architecture, by design it must evolve and
contribute to its own support. Are you making the most of your security
architecture? Is your policy evolved to what the technology can do today? Is
your policy evolved to what the threats are today? When network security
policy, technology and user requirements collide, the end result does not
always equal the intent. So many factors affect our choices when it comes to
security investment, media, news, mailing lists, all have a new threat waiting
to leap upon us, taking down our systems, creating panic. Lets explore
the truths of how much danger you are really in, and how much effort have you
put into protecting your network.

VBAMazing!
Chris Greaves showed us how Microsoft office should have been written. In
particular his perception revealed a user-oriented approach to desktop
computing. And it all runs in Microsoft Word! Members who brought their laptops
followed Chris as he ran the demonstration after installing a free copy of the
application software on their own machines. Memory Key copies were made.

Server Consolidation
Over the past 5 years and more than 2,000 customer studies, we have learned
that average Windows server utilization is approximately 6.8% IBM has developed
a toolset which will help us to profile and solution a customer's environment
to consolidate and optimize utilization of their servers. The tools can profile
Windows, Linux, UNIX, and NetWare servers. A raffle was held - the winner
received a free one-day utilization analysis for up to 300 servers.

A
Single-instruction computer
Chris Greaves ratched us all down a notch and taught us how to write a
hybrid FORTRAN/APL interpreter for a single instruction computer. RISC was
never this risky! We learned how simple a hardware implementation can be, and
how easy it is to custom-design a language to any end-user application. Members
brought a pad of paper and a pencil, to excitedly write the interpreter
themselves. Not a difficult task, as there is only one machine instruction to
be employed anyway.

Defending the
End User (even from themselves!)
The End User carries the identity of any organization in their laptop,
and in the files they might take home at night. Is it possible to be assured
all this data is safe, wherever it might be? There must be a cost in
performance, people time, and productivity to enable a complete endpoint
security that precludes some people from doing anything, and risk impeding
business. What is the cost of enabling business applications safely in today's
market?

Infrastructure Architecture: Who, What, Why, When, and
How
There is a pervasive business challenge today to provide a flexible,
scalable, cost-effective infrastructure to support rapidly changing business
applications. Infrastructure Architecture provides an overall structure that
enables the rapid deployment of well behaved, manageable infrastructure
technologies. The Infrastructure Architecture can provide a valuable tool for
measuring and managing those technologies. This presentation will: Identify the
business benefits that can be realized through the use of architecture; Define
"architecture" in the context of IT infrastructure; Suggest some
specific architecture "artifacts" that have proven to be of practical
benefit; Point out some of the challenges and obstacles that hinder the
development and/or use of an architecture.

SOHO Networking - Reprise
Modern networking technology is rapidly becoming extremely affordable, while at
the same time leaving default configurations extremely vulnerable. An update to
the January 2002 presentation of the same name, this session reviewed the
network concepts appropriate to SOHO and home environments with emphasis on new
technologies (Windows XP SP2, 802.11, VOIP, etc.) and the challenges they
present. This session presented real examples of SOHO networks and set-up
issues and challenges. Topics included security, performance, configuration,
and ISP support experiences.
Don Melton is the senior consultant with Vatic Technologies. Don built and
maintains the complete Windows-based IT infrastructure (including Network
Infrastructure, Storage Infrastructure, Server Infrastructure, etc.) used at
Vatic Technologies. He has leveraged this experience both in setting up
infrastructure for SOHO clients of Vatic Technologies, and as architectural
"common-ground" in discussions with infrastructure groups of larger
clients. Stan Swain is a seasoned "techie" who has developed an
interest in home networking. Over the years, he has discovered many approaches

A brief
overview of z/XDC, a very powerful object code debugging tool
For 27 years, Cole Software has offered
z/XDC to systems programmers and software developers. z/XDC is a
mainframe-based object code/Assembler language debugging tool with some
surprising capabilities. z/XDC can be used to work on simple applications that
run in the TSO user's own address space. It can also be used in ANOTHER TSO
User's address space, in a batch program, in a multitasking program, exits to
JES, any vendor product, SVCs and system routines. It's probably the ultimate
tool for bringing clarity to the debugging process. Using z/XDC, you can
investigate and repair code running under any Request Block, under any Task
Control Block, within any address space on the system including the system
itself. These capabilities have brought Cole Software a fanatic loyalty among
real systems programmers and software developers at nearly every development
house in the world. It's customer base may be small, but includes some of the
brightest minds on the planet. It's been our pleasure serving this small, but
extremely sophisticated user group for so many years.
Bob Shimizu has been with Cole
Software for 16 years, and in that time he has become the primary product
trainer for the z/XDC product.

The Pen _is_
Mightier than the Sword - Keeping your users under control without hurting
them
Programmers (and other users),
deliberately or not, often break rules and standards to get themselves better
throughput, sometimes interfering with production batch and even online
performance. Operations often either hurt the user by cancelling their jobs, or

Transforming documents to PDF
Mission critical print applications are
often written to take advantage of software which does not lend itself well to
presentation. Legacy applications may have been created to create print streams
which are very powerful when used with specific print environments, but may not
be seamlessly integrated in a web environment. These applications need not be
left behind when developing a CRM strategy. We learned about techniques many
companies have used to take advantage of print stream transformations to
present documents on the web. Many of the advanced capabilities of PDF can be
harnessed for putting slick customer-focused solutions in place without
expensive application development.
Ernie Crawford, EDP, is President
of Crawford Technologies Inc. He has
over 18 years of experience with Xerox and AFP print data streams. Mr Crawford
has designed and developed software which converts Xerox and AFP print streams
into PDF, PostScript, AFP, PCL, XML, HTML and other languages.Mar. 21, 2002
